Please consider running for PTO Office! Please note the change in the due date for nominations, we would like to allow individuals to present Candidate Statements.

It is that time of year again! PTO Elections will be held at our second report card pick-up on April 6, 2011. We really need your help, so please consider this important responsibility. Nominations begin on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 and are due by Monday, March 25, 2011.

Listed below is a brief summary of requirements for voting and running for office. On the backside you will see the Officer job responsibilities. If you are interested in any of the positions, please check off the position on the back side and complete the information on the bottom of the form. The Office of Treasurer is not up for election this year since it is a two year term. Please note: While this is a summary, the binding document is the by-laws of the Edison PTO and any omission or error in the explanation below is bound by that document. Please review the PTO by-laws which are located in the Office, at edgifted.org, or at edisongiftedpto.blogspot.com (click on get documents on right hand side).

Voting Requirements:

1) If you are a paid member you may vote in the election. You must be a paid member 30 days to the date of the election in any given year. If you have not paid your dues by March 6, 2011, you will not be allowed to vote.

2) You may not vote by proxy; you must do it in person at Report Card Pick-Up.

3) Only (1) vote is allowed per family.

4) There will be an Election Committee overseeing membership eligibility the day of the election.

Running for Office:

1) You must be a paid member to run for Office. If you have not paid your dues, to be a candidate, you must be a paid member in good standing at least 30 days before the Election Committee presents the slate which will be at the PTO Meeting scheduled for April 6, 2011. This means your dues must be paid and at school no later than March 5, 2011.

2) Since only (1) vote is allowed per family, only (1) family member may run for a PTO Officer position or be on the Board of Directors at any time

3) No Member shall hold more than one office at a time, and no Member shall be eligible to serve more than two consecutive years in the same office.

4) Nominations are due no later than March 25, 2011 and must be at School no later than 2:30 p.m. that day so that the slate of Candidates can be presented at the meeting, “nominations from the floor at the General Meeting, shall be permitted”. We also want to allow for individuals to present Candidate Statements.

5) The Officers shall take office at the conclusion of the General Meeting of the Members scheduled in May.

Excel Fund Letters & Updates

You should of all received your Excel Fund Letter. It is a great end of the year tax deduction or a new year tax deduction. If you go to the yahoo group, there is a completed list if you would like to check if your company has matching. Even if they are not on there, be sure to check with your Human Resources Department.

Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfast is tommorow. The PTO provides the Bus Drivers with gift cards on behalf of the parents and children to thank them.

PTO Elections will be held at the second report card pick-up. While it seems far away, it will be here before you know it! All Officer's positions will be on the ballot except for the Treasurer position which is a 2 year term. Please consider running for a position!

Welcome to the 2010-2011 School year! As a PTO Board, we are ready to get things moving in the right direction for this coming year. We provide Edison Regional Gifted Center with the things necessary to pursue not only a high quality education but more importantly, bring us together as a community.

In order for us to be successful, we need your help. First of all, please join the PTO, if you haven’t done so. This last year the PTO was able to pay for cross-curriculum days, sponsoring events for our families and children, purchasing items for the classroom and school including, field trips for our children, copiers, laptop computers for student use, fine art enrichment, books for the classrooms, after-school programs, Chicago Children’s Choir, Snowflake, academic competitions, rockets, Bus Driver Appreciation, Family Dinner Dance, postage, office supplies, Teacher stipends, and much more!

Some of your may not be aware, that the discretionary funds received by Edison, which are intended to pay for EVERYTHING other than Teachers salary, is only between $8,000 -$11,000 per year. This is why you are so important. Everything that the children and Teacher’s need is funded through the PTO so that Edison can continue to be the exemplary program that is!

Thank you to all of you who completed the Volunteer Survey form and who expressed interest in volunteering your time to a committee or to help out in our many events. Volunteer opportunities are still available. If interested in helping in any way, feel free to contact a PTO Board Member or Kathleen Ziemer our volunteer coordinator at Kathleen@ziemer.net.

Thank you to all the individuals that have volunteered their time to Head a Committee. We would not be as successful as an organization and school if it wasn’t for our parents.

To be held this weekend at Border's, 6103 N. Lincoln Avenue. 15% of the Sales with use of the voucher goes directly to Edison. You can see many performances by Edison's own and purchase books for the Teacher's from their wish lists!

You can shop anytime during these 3 days, share the voucher's with family and friendds too! Remember purchases with the voucher to count only can be used at this location.

Jewel Shop & Share,Certificates Make Cents and Entertainment Books

Certificates Make Cents orders are due tommorow, Friday, October 16th. Remember to purchase Jewel-Osco gift cards to be used next week for our Shop & Share event. This is an easy way to participate in a fundraiser by doing your shopping on October 26, 27, or 28th, present the slip, and the PTO receives a percentage of your purchase. A slip can be copied from the document section on the Yahoo Group.

Entertainment Books were sent home with your child. If you are not interested in purchasing the book, please return in the bag to school. There are some great coupons in the book for restaurants and stores. Don't forget to ask friends and family, including one's outside the Chicago area, if they are interested in purchasing the book -- area books are available for $20, other out-of-state editions prices vary.

Open House & Wish Tree

It was great to see many of you at the Open House last night. I have attached in the yahoo group the "Wish Tree" explanation and "Wish Lists" for the Teachers. Mrs. Heneghan or Mrs. Strelecki did not indicate their needs to me, but you can still opt to donate to their wish list and that will allow them to purchase something for their classroom. Let's see what we can do to fill these wishes for them! Don't forget about the recess wish lists!

Welcome back Edison families!

We hope you had a wonderful break and are ready to finish the 2008-2009 school year in a positive and exciting way.

As I mentioned before the time between spring break and the last day of school are always jam packed full of activities culminating in the end of year celebration on Wednesday, June 10th. I expect this year our end of year celebration will be an exciting fun filled day for all planned by our chair Alex Gallegos (pogallegos99@yahoo.com).

All of the activities bring many chances for you to volunteer your time and talents, so please contact our volunteer coordinator Christine Kim for volunteer information (ckimkrope@gmail.com).

PTO Elections and More

Today is the day that each and every PTO family can cast their ballot and participate in the election of the 2009-2010 Edison Gifted PTO Executive Board. Our Election Committee volunteers will be on hand to make this process as simple as possible for everyone.

Don't forget to stop by the gym clothes table (while it is available) and don't forget your book lists for the Scholastic Book Fair.

Our year is about to be revved up and into high gear so please mark your calendars with all of the important dates from now until the last day of school, June 12. Volunteer opportunities will be seemingly endless. Look for notices for volunteers needed for specific events or contact our volunteer coordinator at ckimkrope@gmail.com.

One new date to add is May 19, when through the efforts of 4th grade parent and current PTO Board member Kristie Hansen, we will all be treated to an appearance by Jesse White and the Jesse White Tumblers. What a sight that will be on Sawyer Avenue!

Last but certainly not least - thank you to all of the Edison Community who have made our annual Legacy dinner such a success. In this economic climate you have stepped up and put your faith in us again and helped us to raise the much needed money to directly support our children in their academic and co-curricular pursuits. Your generosity is unparalleled.

PTO Election and Candidate Statements

3rd quarter report card pick up has historically been the time for PTO elections and in that respect this year is no different. We will be holding the election for the PTO Executive Board during the hours of report card pick up on Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Our fantastic election committee members will be on hand through the entire process so make sure you stop by to say hello and vote.

PTO Mailbox Contest

Yes, it is true, after waiting for some time for a donated mailbox that did not materialize we have purchased a safe, secure, sure to stay in place mailbox. This is the place where your children can drop off any items that are PTO related - this will save the teachers, staff and administration both time and headaches trying to collect all of the various forms throughout the year. We now have a one stop drop!

The PTO would like your children to help us decorate the mailbox so we are running a

"Paint the PTO Mailbox Contest".

The contest is open to all Edison students.

Submissions must be on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

Name and grade on back in pencil.

One submission from each grade will be chosen to be displayed and then they will be voted on by the Edison students.

Show your Edison pride!

Submissions to : "Paint the Mailbox" in care of Kristie Hansen (put them in the mailbox).

Submission deadline is April 13, 2009.

Voting will take place at our 3rd quarter report card pick up on Wednesday, April 1st.

On Tuesday January 13, 2009 at 12:30 pm you can join us for the first PTO meeting of the new year. We expect this to be a year filled with great opportunities for Edison students and parents alike.

We have been spending a lot of time this past year on the mechanics of the Edison Gifted PTO and how we can make the PTO work best for our school, and most importantly our children. After all, our children are the reason we do all of this aren't they? One of the reasons we have been spending so much time on these tasks (and a huge thank you goes out to our spectacular treasurer who has spent so much of her precious time putting our plans and suggestions into action) is to make it easier for any parent who wants to step in to be able to step in and run, knowing that a path has been clearly marked for them to travel all the while having the freedom of creativity. Your idea could be the one that makes the difference in a child's life.

Please consider running for a PTO board position or chairing one of our many committees during the 2009-2010 school year. You can contact any of the current board members to get a complete idea of what any given position entails.

It has been a busy 6 weeks!

Our last PTO meeeting on November 18th was very productive. Our thanks to all of you who have come out to the meetings. Your support is essential to the success of the PTO.

We are gearing up for two of our largest fundraisers of the year: Excel and Legacy! If you haven't already, please consider making a donation to the Excel Fund and if you have thank you, thank you, thank you. Excel donations are a perfect way for family and friends to be able to participate, especially those who don't live nearby. Also, Legacy (our annual dinner, dance and silent auction) will be here before you know it (Saturday March 28th, 2009) so start saving your pennies for bidding on those wonderful items donated by our teachers, and those created by our talented children. It is sure to be a night to remember.

Being a PTO Board member is a wonderful way to see what goes on in the school on a regular basis, but more importantly offers you the opportunity to use your talents and skill sets to help the Edison community in a positive way. This year is an election year for all positions (Treasurer being the exception): President, 1st VP, 2nd VP, 1st Secretary and 2nd Secretary and we would like you to consider running. If you would like more information on a specific position and what duties are involved, or are ready to put your name on the ballot for the April election please contact me at jakeadoo@aol.com.

The PTO Needs You!

Being prepared is essential for the Edison Gifted PTO to continue to be a successful and supportive organization, and following that idea I say it is never too early to begin putting out the word that this year all of the PTO positions, with the exception of Treasurer will be open (voting takes place during the April report card pick up). Being a PTO Board member is a very rewarding experience and affords you the opportunity to be involved in the development of new ideas, raising much needed funds and seeing how the school runs from the inside out. If you are interested in running, or just want to hear more about what a given position entails please feel free to contact me.

The first PTO meeting of the 2008-2009 school year!

On Tuseday September 9th, the first PTO meeting of the year was held. We had a large turnout which was great to see. The first meeting of the year is always a bit bumpy and this year was no exception, but once we got going we were able to attend to the business at hand. We were delighted to hear that the administration is moving quickly towards having an offficial Edison website up and running!
As always the PTO meetings are open to all and we encourage you not only to attend, but to participate. This is your PTO! Bring your ideas and enthusiasm to our next meeting to be held on October 14th at 1pm in room 214. Don't forget to stop by the security desk to pick up your visitors badge.

A new year has begun!

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year! This will be a year of learning for all of us, children and parents alike. It is a year of change and in that vein we have created this PTO blog where you can come to gather information from the PTO.
We have also created a yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/edisongiftedpto)
where we will have all of our PTO materials available for downloading, if a form came home from the PTO you can be sure to find a downloadable version here. We are hoping to move towards becoming a greener and more environmentally friendly PTO by eventually reducing the amount of paper sent home with the children and usage of these electronic forms will be necessary to accomplish that. We are also hoping that this venue will allow us to communicate more effectively. Please join our yahoo group and check back here frequently for updates.

We are looking forward to a great year of service to our children, families and faculty.
